What Makes For a Healthy Spine?

Usually when I pose this question to patients they are quick to respond - strength! A strong back is a healthy back! While that statement is true, it is not complete. There is no doubt that strong muscular support of your spine will go along way toward keeping your spine healthy, however there is more to it than that. I can count hundreds of patients that have come into my clinic looking like a picture of health, only to discover that their back is not functioning at all and they are ravaged by the symptoms of postural stress, injury and massive degeneration. 

It is important to remember that your spine is made up of 24 individual bones and discs - all charged with the job of protecting your spinal cord - the main information line from your brain to the rest of your body. Inter-segmental mobility and proper alignment of each vertebrae is incredibly important to maintain flexibility and ward off disc degeneration. 

Remember muscle pain should resolve within a couple of weeks. Muscles are incredibly good at healing. If you are having chronic pain that is lasting beyond 4 weeks, you might be dealing with nerve pain, disc injury or a misalignment in your spine.
